DC bar unveils slate of cocktails for Super Tuesday; patrons can vote with their drinks through November...
Washington, DC's Topaz Bar is celebrating Super Tuesday this evening with special beverages inspired by the GOP presidential hopefuls who are vying for delegates. Though he has no Super Tuesday worries, President Obama gets his own drink on the 2012 Campaign Cocktail Menu, too: The "Home Sweet Home," a variation on the classic DC cocktail The Rickey. It's made with Bulleit Bourbon, lime juice, club soda and a hint of pineapple juice, in a nod to the President's (real!) birth state. It sells for $9. "Obama’s looking to keep his cushy digs at the White House for the next four years," the Topaz notes about the name of the drink.
Located in the Topaz Hotel on N Street in DuPont Circle, the Topaz Bar will be serving the "Home Sweet Home" and the GOP drinks during a Super Tuesday viewing party from 5:00 PM-closing, with Kimpton Mixologist Rico Wisner whipping up the politically themed fare. All the drinks will continue to be served until an official GOP nominee is selected. Through Election Night in November, the bar will track orders of the beverages for President Obama and the GOP candidate--one cocktail equals one vote--and attempt to predict a winner. Such contests with cocktails, burgers and cupcakes, named for Sen. Obama and his GOP rival Sen. John McCain, were popular during the 2008 campaign.
2012 Topaz Bar Campaign Cocktail Menu:
Romney Float – This rich, non-alcoholic treat features Old Dominion Root Beer finished with whipped heavy cream and a house-made “Salted Lake” caramel drizzle ($5). For those who can’t resist the hard stuff, a shot of Root Organic Liqueur ($6) can be added.
Rick’s Tea Party – Throw your support towards Santorum. Tea is a large part of the mix in this cocktail featuring Green Tea Infused Absolut Vodka, Benedictine Liqueur, lemon juice and simple syrup. ($9)
Ron’s PBR – Swig down an old-school beer that appeals to the younger generations too, and show support for Ron Paul with a can of Pabst Blue Ribbon. ($5)
Gin-grich and Tonic – Choose an old classic with a hint of the South in honor of Newt with this twist on a traditional gin and tonic. Enjoy Bluecoat American Dry Gin and Fentimans Tonic Water topped off with a Leopold Bros. Peach Liqueur float. ($9)
"The Topaz Bar’s presidential past dates back to the early 1900s when Theodore Roosevelt lived where the hotel now stands, during his tenure as McKinley’s Vice President and for a short time when president, before officially moving into the White House," notes a PR release for the event. "For this reason, 1733 N Street itself was sometimes referred to as the “Little White House.”
