Gridiron snack: The President loves chips and guacamole...
The First Family is going low-key for the Super Bowl this year, and it will be a "quiet" celebration, unlike last year's extravaganza, a White House party for about 200 guests, First Lady Michelle Obama told Rachael Ray in an interview that aired today. “We'll probably watch it at home. It'll probably be a quiet Super Bowl this year,” Mrs. Obama told Ray.
Ray filmed the interview last Wednesday when she joined Mrs. Obama to unveil new federal school lunch standards at Parklawn Elementary School in Virginia, and the interview focused on Mrs. Obama's Let's Move! campaign, but Ray is a big Super Bowl fan, and the topic got worked in (Ray dished with Obama Foodorama about her day with the First Lady).
In 2011, the Obamas' Super Bowl party guests included Cabinet Secretaries, lawmakers, and Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony. The party marked the debut of the history-making White House Homebrewed Beer, and the White House Super Bowl menu included Cheeseburgers, Deep Dish Pizza, Buffalo Wings, a number of potato dishes, Bratwurst and Kielbasa.
Guacamole is the President's favorite snack while watching football, according to the First Lady, who said he "loves avocado."
"That's his favorite snack food, a chip dipped in some guac,” Mrs. Obama said. “You know nachos are always good, [if] it's fresh tomato sauce and you get it on sort of a good quality tortilla."
Last year's menu caused plenty of headlines, with critics hailing it as unhealthy in light of Mrs. Obama's Let's Move! campaign.
"I don't even know what you have other than some hot dogs and some burgers for a Super Bowl party. That's what the Super Bowl is," Mrs. Obama said when defending the choices.
The interview with Ray was one part of a TV triple header for Mrs. Obama this week, which included an appearance on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and The Ellen DeGeneres Show.
