Though President's Day officially celebrates the birthday of President George Washington, here's a blast from the past in homage to President Obama's own "favorite" Commander in Chief, President Abraham Lincoln. On Feb. 15, 2009, cake artist Zilly Rosen and a crack team of food artisans installed this double portrait made from 5,900 mini vanilla cupcakes on the floor of the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, DC. Titled "A New Birth of Freedom," the portrait commemorated the newly inaugurated President Obama, and Lincoln's Feb. 12th birthday bicentennial. (Above: An overhead view of the portrait)
For the portrait, Rosen blended a photo of Mr. Obama taken in 20o7 by Annie Leibowitz with the famous 1865 Alexander Gardner portrait of Lincoln, taken two weeks before he delivered the Gettysburg Address. Each cupcake had a colored topping of rolled fondant icing, which Rosen and her team placed on a colored grid system designed for the installation. The cupcakes were tiny, as can be seen from the photo above, with a penny for perspective.
Installing the portrait involved Rosen and her team working outward from the center of the portrait, placing each cupcake in position. The portrait had a very short life span: It was eaten about six hours after installation by the thrilled crowd that showed up to view it. (Above: The installation in process)
In 2009, Rosen's cake art company, Zilly Cakes in Buffalo, New York, got a big boost in business when a different portrait of Mr. Obama, also made of mini cupcakes, appeared all over the internet.
