President Obama E-Mails Supporters: Send "FLOTUS" A Birthday Greeting

"I know she'd love to hear from you"...Supporters who sign are asked for donations...
First Lady Michelle Obama turns 48 on January 17th, and with a policy of letting no "holiday" pass without using it for his re-election effort, President Obama on Thursday sent an e-mail asking supporters to sign a birthday card through the Obama for America website. The President noted that Mrs. Obama's "nickname" is FLOTUS (First Lady of the US) before worrying that the race for re-election is going to be brutal. "The next 10 months will be harder than any we've experienced together, and I couldn't do it without her," President Obama wrote. "I know she'd love to hear from you."

Supporters who sign the First Lady's card are asked for a donation, and then sent a follow-up e-mail urging them to follow Mrs. Obama on Twitter. Obama for America today unveiled a new Twitter account for Mrs. Obama, who did her first stumping for 2012 on Wednesday in Virginia. The President campaigned in Chicago, and raised more than $2 million. OFA announced today that it raised more than $68 million in the fourth quarter of fundraising, which closed on Dec. 31, 2011.  (Above: The screen that appears after signing the First Lady's card)

The subject heading for the President's e-mail was "FLOTUS."

The text of the e-mail:

XXXX --

When you become president, one thing that happens overnight is that you and everyone you love get a bunch of new nicknames.

I was already pretty used to this. But "FLOTUS," short for First Lady of the United States, is really something else.

I'm writing because our FLOTUS, Michelle, turns 48 on Tuesday, and I know I'm not her only fan out there.

Will you join me in wishing her a happy birthday?

The decision to become part of this campaign was deeply personal for a lot of people, and Michelle and I are no exception. But we both knew, like anyone else who believes in what we're trying to do here, that this was never going to be easy.

This fall, Michelle and I will have been married 20 years. The next 10 months will be harder than any we've experienced together, and I couldn't do it without her. I know she'd love to hear from you today:

Thanks for your support,
