The Gold Star Family tree...First Lady Michelle Obama's "Shine, Give, Share" holiday theme honors members of the military and their families. Above, two stars on the Gold Star Family Christmas tree in the East Wing bear the names of members of the military who made the ultimate sacrifice. The tree is surrounded with photos and stories from more than 800 Gold Star families.
"Each one showcases the strength and resilience that characterizes our Gold Star families," Mrs. Obama said.
Gold Star families have been invited to inscribe a ceramic gold star ornament with a personalized note. Visitors to the White House over the last few weeks have been able to write notes to service members on active duty to express their gratitude, which are dropped in a mailbox beside the tree.
President Obama and Mrs. Obama traveled to Ft. Bragg on Wednesday, to welcome home troops returning from the war in Iraq.
