First Lady Michelle Obama, Daughters Jet To Aspen For Presidents' Day Ski Vacation

President Obama is at home at the White House...
First Lady Michelle Obama is taking advantage of the long Presidents' Day holiday weekend, and arrived in Aspen, Colorado on Friday afternoon with daughters Malia and Sasha for a ski vacation, reports the Aspen Daily News. The private family outing was not announced by the White House, but the East wing confirmed it. Mrs. Obama and her party are reportedly staying at the home of Jim and Paula Crown, who own and operate Aspen Skiing Co., which has four resorts in Aspen. On Saturday, Mrs. Obama and the girls skied at the Crowns' Buttermilk, a resort designed for beginners and families. (Above: Mrs. Obama and the girls in Aspen)

President Obama is at home in Washington. Mrs. Obama spent last year's long weekend in Colorado, too, hitting the slopes at Vail and Beaver Creek. During that vacation, the First Lady's dinner visit to Restaurant Kelly Liken created international headlines after talk show host Rush Limbaugh called the First Lady "fat" on air, thanks to her order of a pickled pumpkin salad with arugula and a braised ancho-chile short rib with hominy wild mushrooms and sauteed kale. Chef Liken pushed back, and was later invited to the White House for a visit.

This year's vacation is getting the expected criticism because the US economy is still performing poorly, and Mrs. Obama was on vacation for 17 days in Hawaii over the Christmas holiday.

Last July, Mrs. Obama spoke at a 2012 fundraiser at the Crowns’ residence to about 150 supporters, who paid between $1,000 and $10,000 to attend. The event was a joint fundraiser for the Democratic National Committee and President Obama’s 2012 campaign.

Jim Crown, who hails from Chicago, is a member of the Crown Family, which owns Henry Crown and Company, an investment firm that owns or has interests in a variety of business assets, including stakes in sports teams the Chicago Bulls and the New York Yankees, banking (JPMorgan Chase), and real estate (Rockefeller Center).
