President Obama Takes First Lady To 48th Birthday Dinner At DC's BLT Steak - The Menu, The Details

First Lady has visited the restaurant before; steak and birthday cake in the candlelit private dining room...
President Obama
on Tuesday evening escorted First Lady Michelle Obama to DC's BLT Steak restaurant to celebrate her 48th birthday, her third in the White House. They were joined by ten friends for the 2 1/2 hour steak dinner party in an intimate private dining room, which ended with a candle-topped Red Velvet birthday cake. Guests included Senior Advisor Valerie Jarrett and Attorney General Eric Holder and his wife Dr. Sharon Malone.  (Above: The President and Mrs. Obama this afternoon at the White House)

Mrs. Obama is something of a regular at BLT Steak, which features a $28 "Obama Burger" on the lunch menu, and is located just a few blocks from the White House.

"The First Lady dines with us quite regularly," BLT assistant general manager Matt Wright, who did double duty as a server for the birthday party, told Obama Foodorama.  Mrs. Obama last had dinner at BLT with a girlfriend on January 6th, he said.

Steak is an Obama favorite for special occasions: It was served as the entree for every high profile White House dinner in 2011. And steak is what everyone celebrating Mrs. Obama's birthday ordered, according to Wright. The First Lady was clad in black for her birthday outfit--"with pearls," said Wright, and the party was all smiles as they arrived for the 7:00 PM dinner.

"When we first married, it was a little controversial that she was 20 years younger than me, but now it seems to have worked out OK," the President joked on Tuesday afternoon, by way of noting that his wife is fabulous at 48.

The First Lady's birthday menu...
For dinner, the President and Mrs. Obama both enjoyed American Wagyu Top Cap, which is served in a 10 0z portion ($81). Executive Chef Victor Albisu personally did the cooking, which earned him a hug and warm thanks from the First Lady at the end of the evening. Side dishes were family style for the table, and included French Fries, Mashed Potatoes, Caramelized Brussel Sprouts with Bacon, Creamed Spinach, and Hen of the Woods Mushrooms. Appetizers ordered for the table to share were also steak: The American Wagyu Skirt Steak (10 0z, $55) and 28-Day Dry Aged New York Strip (16 0z, $46). House-made sauces are served with the steaks, and include Horseradish, Peppercorn, 3 Mustards, and "Steak" sauce.

The house signature bread is a huge, fluffy Popover, served piping hot to guests after ordering, accompanied by a salt shaker the size of a pint of milk. The Obama party enjoyed red and white wine with their dinner, Wright said. He was joined by two other managers who performed the duties of servers.

The birthday cake was Red Velvet, which is not on the BLT menu but served because it is "a favorite" of the First Lady's, Wright said. There was no inscription on top, thanks to a crumb topping, and the cake was accompanied by Cream Cheese Ice Cream. Mrs. Obama closed her eyes and made a wish before blowing out the candles to cheers from her guests.

"She got them all out in one puff," Wright said, and speculated on the First Lady's unspoken wish: "Given that it's 2012, we can guess what it might be."

The Obamas greet fellow diners...
To get to the private dining room requires walking through BLT's main dining room, and the President and Mrs. Obama, as they made their exit shortly after 9:30 PM, shook hands and greeted well-wishers in the by-then packed restaurant. The President also got up once during the dinner and walked into the main dining room, where he shook hands and chatted with guests.

"They were very gracious on the way out," Wright said--which included Mrs. Obama's hug for Chef Albisu and her words of thanks. Wright was unsure who paid the bill for the evening.

No wrapped gifts were spotted, and First Grandmother Marian Robinson was not among the guests for her daughter's party, as she has been for the First Lady's past birthday celebrations at Washington restaurants. In 2011, the Obams dined at The Source; in 2010 they celebrated at Restaurant Nora; and in 2009, before the inauguration, they visited Equinox. More here about Obama birthday dinners past. Tuesday afternoon, as she joined the President in welcoming 2011 World Series champs the St. Louis Cardinals to the White House, Mrs. Obama was presented with a baseball bat and "44" jersey as birthday gifts.

Heavy security presence...including in the kitchen
BLT remained open to diners during the Obama party, but Secret Service were everywhere, including in the kitchen, observing Albisu cooking, Wright said. Other patrons were not wanded as they entered during the evening, nor did they pass through a metal detector at the entrance--just those entering the private dining room in the back of the restaurant were screened.

The private dining room was reserved in advance for an unnamed VIP party, and management wasn't positive that it would be the Obamas until the President's security detail showed up about a half hour ahead of the visit, Wright said. Management were not surprised, however: Mrs. Obama's birthday was headline news.

"We didn't know who was coming, but we put two and two together," Wright said.

BLT Steak, originally the brainchild of French chef/entrepreneur Laurent Tourondel, features burgers on the lunch menu honoring the President, part of a daily rotation on the "Political Burger Board." The "Obama Burger" has an 8 oz Kobe American Beef patty with cheddar cheese, bacon, burnt tomato ketchup, and scallion mustard.

Mrs. Obama's "secret" visits with friends to BLT Steak were revealed in April of 2011, when hockey superstar Alex Ovechkin, captain of the Washington Capitals, tweeted a photo of himself and the First Lady, cozy in a booth. They weren't dining together, just snapping photos. An East Wing spokesman told Obama Foodorama that Mrs. Obama had dined there "incognito," a la her Target runs. (Above: Ovechkin and Mrs. Obama)

Mrs. Obama's birthday party was the first Presidential dinner outing in the District for 2012. The President celebrated his 50th birthday with a big private White House party on August 4th, 2011. Daughter Malia turned 13 on July 4th, 2011. Daughter Sasha turned ten on June 10, 2011, and celebrated with a party at Georgetown Cupcake.

The motorcade arrived back at the White House at 9:42 PM. During the dinner, a large protest from Occupy DC was going on in front of the White House, and "smoking objects" had been thrown over the North fence. The White House went into lockdown mode, with all of Pennsylvania Avenue closed. The two Occupy DC encampments in the District are both within blocks of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. The President's press pool was detained on campus after returning from the dinner--where they were held across the street during the party--and were allowed to leave the White House 45 minutes later, exiting through the Eisenhower Executive Office Building entrance on 17th street. Pool did not see the Presidential party before or after the dinner.

OFA's Birthday Card Popularity Poll For First Lady

OFA aides make a bet that First Lady's card will get more signatures than President's 50th birthday card...
UPDATE: The First Lady's birthday dinner was at BLT Steak
Obama for America's Deputy Campaign Manager Julianna Smoot today sent supporters an e-mail, challenging them to "show some love" and sign First Lady Michelle Obama's birthday card, so Mrs. Obama gets more birthday wishes than President Obama did for his OFA-created card in August, 2011. Smoot bet Campaign Manager Jim Messina that Mrs. Obama will get more signatures, she said. The First Lady turns 48 today. (Above: The OFA screen for Mrs. Obama's birthday card is different today than when the card was launched last week)

"Messina and I have a friendly bet as to whether more people will sign the First Lady's birthday card than the President's back in August," Smoot wrote. "Don't worry, no one's got $10K on the line. But I don't like losing."

Birthday donations...
Those who sign Mrs. Obama's card are encouraged to donate to OFA after sending their birthday greetings; a donation page comes up after signing, with a photo of the President that reads "Fight for the Obamas."

No worries that the President will be miffed to discover his wife is more popular: "I think Barack would want it this way," Smoot wrote.

The subject heading for Smoot's e-mail was "I don't like to lose" for some supporters; others got the same e-mail with a subject line that read "Will FLOTUS best POTUS?"

Today: First Lady Michelle Obama Turns 48, Marks Third Birthday In The White House

A look back at birthday dinners in years past...
UPDATE: The First Lady's birthday dinner was at BLT Steak
On the heels of making her debut as a sitcom actor on iCarly on Monday night, First Lady Michelle Obama today celebrates her 48th birthday. It is Mrs. Obama's third in the White House: In 2009, she turned 45 right before President-Elect Obama's inauguration. In years past, Mr. Obama has feted Mrs. Obama with special birthday dinners at local restaurants, but there is no such event listed on the President's official schedule for today, because private dinners never are. (Above: For Mrs. Obama's first birthday as First Lady in 2010, staff presented her with a cake and a pastry version of the White House, created by Executive Pasty Chef Bill Yosses)

Today, Mrs. Obama will share her birthday with the St. Louis Cardinals: At 3:05 PM, she'll join her husband in the East Room to welcome the 2011 World Series Champions to the White House to honor their victory. There will likely be an impromptu rendition of "Happy Birthday." Last week, the President e-mailed re-election supporters, asking them to sign a birthday card for his wife.

"The next 10 months will be harder than any we've experienced together, and I couldn't do it without her," President Obama wrote. "I know she'd love to hear from you."

Birthday dinners for Mrs. Obama in Washington have all been at restaurants that focus on local, organic and sustainable sourcing.

In 2011, the President took Mrs. Obama to celebrate her 47th birthday at The Source, a Wolfgang Puck-owned restaurant located in the same building as the Newseum. The dinner at the Asian fusion eatery was held in an upstairs private room with the blinds drawn. The President and Mrs. Obama enjoyed a five-course menu prepared by Executive Chef Scott Drewno. It included spicy tuna cones, tandoori arctic char, and a house made dim sum platter. For her entree, Mrs. Obama had the wok-fired lobster with Chinese garlic sauce; the President had a prime filet with smoked onion chili sauce. They finished with The Source’s signature 15-layer carrot cake with “Happy Birthday” written in chocolate on top. The restaurant later ran Mrs. Obama's birthday menu as a special.

In 2010, for her first official birthday as First Lady, the President feted Mrs. Obama with a surprise party at Restaurant Nora on Jan. 16, the eve of the big day. The First Lady was surprised, and the party lasted close to four hours.

The guest list of 11 included longtime Chicago friends, Senior Advisors, Mrs. Marian Robinson and Attorney General Eric Holder. Mrs. Obama dined on a salad of mixed greens (a special order, not on the menu), and ordered a specially prepared rack of lamb with preserved lemon and mint salad accompanied by chick pea puree, with green beans and sun-dried tomatoes. She had white wine to begin--a glass of 2008 Spottswoode Sauvignon Blanc--and red wine for the entree. Her birthday dessert was a bittersweet molten chocolate cake with cappuccino ice cream. The President dined on pan-seared Maine lobster and saffron risotto. (Above: Mrs. Obama outside Nora)

Chef Benjamin Lambert cooked. Nora is the first restaurant in the US to receive organic certification, and chef/owner Nora Pouillon has visited the White House, and is active in Mrs. Obama's Let's Move! campaign.

In 2009, the President-elect treated Mrs. Obama to a birthday dinner at Equinox restaurant. They were joined by 11 guests at Chef Todd Gray's chic farm-to-table establishment, co-owned with his wife Ellen Gray, which is located just blocks from the White House.

For her birthday dinner, Mrs. Obama started with Rappahannock oysters with apple and celery root mousseline, followed by a strip loin with thinly sliced Yukon gold potato and wilted spinach. Her birthday dessert was vanilla ice cream with caramelized bananas. The First Lady drank a cabernet sauvignon with dinner. She returned for lunch last year with Mrs. Margarita Zavala, the First Lady of Mexico.

Todd Gray cooked the birthday dinner, and has since become very active with Mrs. Obama's Let's Move! campaign. He spoke at the huge White House launch event in 201o for the First Lady's Chefs Move to Schools initiative, when hundreds of chefs gathered on the South Lawn.

Though Mrs. Obama turned 45 before she became First Lady, when she arrived at the White House in 2009, staff presented her with a birthday cake. On Jan. 22, as she held her first meet-and-greet with her new employees, Executive Pastry Chef Bill Yosses and Assistant Pastry Chef Susie Morrison wheeled a cake into the East Room (above). It was topped with fruit, candles and best wishes spelled out on a plaque. It was a sweet beginning to Mrs. Obama's new White House life.

The President celebrated his 50th birthday with a big private White House party on August 4th, 2011. Daughter Malia turned 13 on July 4th, 2011. Daughter Sasha turned ten on June 10, 2011, and celebrated with a party at Georgetown Cupcake.

Happy Birthday, Vice President Joe Biden!

Dr. Jill Biden organizes a special gift for VP's 69th...
Vice President Joe Biden celebrates his 69th birthday today, his second since being sworn in to office. He's spending the day in Wilmington, Delaware and has no public events scheduled, according to the White House. In 2009, Biden celebrated his last birthday before becoming Vice President at Transition headquarters in Chicago, where President Obama presented him with a dozen cupcakes (above). It's the only Obama-Biden birthday photo released by the Administration that actually includes cake in the image.

Dr. Jill Biden will not be spending the big *&%!$*# deal of a day with her spouse in Delaware. Instead, she will be in Florida, joining First Lady Michelle Obama at Homestead-Miami Speedway as co-grand marshal for the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup finale. They'll be hosting a barbecue for military families, and announcing a new private-sector jobs commitment for veterans as part of the Joining Forces campaign.

But on Friday, Dr. Biden orchestrated a special birthday celebration for the Vice President, sending an email to Obama campaign supporters, asking them to sign an online birthday card. It was also from the First Family, Dr. Biden said. (Above: The online card)

"I know I don't usually send you emails, but Joe has a birthday coming up this Sunday, and I'm trying something new," Dr. Biden wrote. "The First Family and I are putting together a special card for him...So help us make this birthday a memorable one for Joe."

The subject heading for the e-mail was "Sign Joe's card."

The full text:

Friend--

I know I don't usually send you emails, but Joe has a birthday coming up this Sunday, and I'm trying something new.

The First Family and I are putting together a special card for him, and we'd like as many supporters of this campaign as possible to add their names and messages for Joe.

Because the year ahead is going to be a big one -- not just for Joe and me, but for all of us. We've all got some work to do.

So help us make this birthday a memorable one for Joe. Add your names, and, if you like, your own notes and well-wishes for the year ahead:

http://my.barackobama.com/For-Joe

Thanks,

Jill
